In the country America, Chicago is one of the most westernized cities and it is more famous for slaughter-houses and gang wars. But Swami Vivekanand was the first Indian to enter this citadel and hoist the flag of Hindu philosophy and culture. This happened in the year 1893 but still that flag is flying high and his work is continued by his followers.

Vivekahand was born in Calcutta on 12th Jan, 1863. His father was Vishwanathbabu Datta and his mother was Bhuvaneshwari. From childhood he was an intelligent and fearless boy. He was not cowered by the tale of a ghost staying up the tree and climbed the same. He completed college education in the city but his father used to guide him in study of literature and philosophy. He obtained BA. degree in

As a young man he was sceptical of the existence of God and transcendental life. Many learned persons were stumped by him with the question “ Have you seen God yourself. If not, how can you say that there is God." This game continued for some time. One day he came to know that there is a devoted person Ramkrishna Param Hausa who gives discourses on God. He went to Ramkrishna and asked point-blank "Have you seen God."

The answer was "yes, I have seen God." This surprised Narendra and he asked " Can I see God" Again the answer was yes. This non plussed him. He asked meekly "When can I see God!

Ramkrishna answered " When the time comes ! " Narendra started coming to his Guru and on one fateful day Narendra was told to come near and was told " I will show you God."Narendra approached near,Ramkrishna put his hand on Narendra's head and told "Now you can see God. "

As Narendra told later he went into trance, he had a feeling of ecstacy and his scepticism and doubts went away. After some time he came to his senses and realized that his quest was over ‘.

From that day Narendra became the most trusted disciple of Ramkrishna; the great sage gave him everything that he had learned and Narendra was set to conquer the spiritual world."

Narendra was told to become "Sanyasi" and his name was changed to Swami Vivekananda. Swamiji learned all books on Hindu Philosophy. He travelled throughout the country to study the plight and problems of poor people. He was not a mere armchair philosopher. He wanted Indian people to rise, become learned and prosperous and that Indians should lead the world in both material and metaphysical field.

In his journey he reached the southern tip of India viz. Kanyakumari. He went to a rock which was in the sea away from shore. He observed penance for three days from 25 Dec. to 27 Dec 1892. He came back to the city determined to guide millions in the path.

It may be noted that Ramkrishna Paramhamsa had passed away in 1886 and now Swamiji had the task of spreading the message of Ramkrishna in the world.

The next year i.e. in 1893 there was a conference on all religious in Chicago. Sharadamata inspired him and helped him to attend this conference to represent Hindu Religion. He reached Chicago on 11 Sept. 1893. When the conference started other orators started their lectures addressing the audience in a very bombastic and convoluted manner. But when Swamiji's turn came, he started with these simple words.

Brothers and sisters of America.

At these words he got a thunderous applause. Of course the remaining lectures received the rapt attention.

It is not to be supported, that he won over by these four words. He was a very learned man who had profound thoughts and a very powerful vocabloury in English.

Later he went to England. Margaret Noble became his disciple who was named Bhagini Nivedita. He also went to Japan and toured all over India. In the year 1898 he constructed Ramkrishna Math and also started Ramkrishna Mission. These two gave the world continuous flow of devoted sanyasis who engaged themselves in spreading Hindu religion and philosophy.

Swamiji was not satisfied with dry words only. So he started Mathas at many places. Ramkrishna Matha started many schools and also helped poor people in times of distress.

Unfortunately Swamiji had a very short life span. He expired at the age of 39 only. He left the world poorer. The most outstanding contribution of Swamiji was spread of Hindu Philosophy. He did not want anyone to abandon his religion and get converted. Any one can remain in his religion and still study Hindu Philosophy.
